Height:
8 feet
Construction time:
35 hours
Burn time:
3 hours
Materials:
Various milled woods, screws, rebar, dried herb stalks
Burning aids:
A mix of ½ tiki lamp oil, ½ gasoline was applied with
deck sprayer before and
during burn. The sculpture was ignited with a fire spinning torch that
had been
lit with a flame started by friction dowelling.
Catchment:
5 X 5 foot tray made of metal roofing supported by metal bars and
bricks.
Participation:
Shield shapes cut out of colored construction paper represented the
ways in
which we stop ourselves from freely expressing ourselves to other
people.
People wrote on one side of the shield those things that they are
afraid people
will think about them if they were to express themselves fully. On the
other
side they wrote what they truly wish to express and what they hoped
people
would think about them after expressing their deepest feelings. The
shields
were stapled to the sculpture before burning.
Design features:
Dried stalks of lavender, basil, oregano and various flowers were
stuffed into
voids in the wooden dancing figure and wrapped with tie wire. Two ten foot lengths of
5/8 inch rebar supported the structure as it burned. A heart shape, cut
out of
thicker wood and suspended within the rebar in the chest area, was left
burning
after most of the sculpture had burned away.
